Liberty Blue Staffordshire Small Oval 12" Virginia Governor's House Scene. Ironstone Original Copper Engraving of Historical Scenes. Made In England. Very Good Condition, Chip and Crack Free. This mansion was built in 1722 and was home to seven Royal governors of Virginia before the outbreak of the Revolutionary war. Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson were the first governors of the Commonwealth of Virginia to reside there. It was used as an official headquarters during the war. Thomas Jefferson started remodeling the house while he lived there. The house was used by American forces as a hospital after the siege of Yorktown. The orchard terrace that overlooked the house became a cemetery for fallen patriots. In the dead of the night on December 22, 1781, the mansion rapidly burned to the ground in only three hours. For almost 150 years, the grounds were largely ignored. With the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg in the 1920's, the mansion was rebuilt to the original floor plan. The inside was decorated with furnishings that matched its original splendor. On the front of the house, the British royal arms have been rehung above the door to symbolize their importance to the house. Buy With Confidence. Satisfaction Guaranteed! |
