Betsy Ross was a flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy, and most likely made the Grand Union flag. According to Betsy's grandson, William Canby, the Continental Congress contacted his grandmother to create a flag for the country in 1776. The story was first told to him in 1870.

While Betsy Ross had long been listed as the designer of our flag, it is now felt that several flag makers had an effect on its design. The Betsy Ross story has long been accepted as fact and now is a significant part of American history and heritage.
