Depression Glass Reproductions
Depression glass reproductions can easily fool the untrained eye, even for the savvy collector. Following is a list of known depression glass reproductions by manufacturer and pattern. This reference serves as a partial guide and is in no way complete. We will update the listings as our awareness increases.
Privately produced out of Korea through a St. Louis importing company, the butter dish is the only known reproduction of this pattern thus far. Large leaf veins do not join the center vein; normally the veins of all leaves at the center of the design are very clear-cut whereas the reproductions are indistinct and almost invisible in one leaf of the center design. Mold lines are very poor and glossy light pink.
Indiana Glass Company has a “Tiara Exclusives Line”, produced from 1974-1980’s in pink, green, and fifteen additional colors never made originally. The green avocado pitcher was reproduced in 1979, which was darker than the original green. Yellow pieces, never made originally, have surfaced on today’s market. The newer pink pitchers appear more orange than the original light pink. Original colors for avocado pattern were pink, green, crystal, white (1950’s); yellow mist, burnt honey and water sets in myriad frosted and transparent colors for Tiara Home Products, 1974-1998.
This pattern, originally produced by Mosser Glass Co. in Ohio is now manufactured overseas in pink, green, cobalt salt and pepper shakers and in yellow, pink and green children’s dishes called “Jennifer” were never made originally. The shaker patterns are weak impressions and never made originally in blue.
Pitcher reproductions have a plain bald strip of glass cutting the bottom of the pitcher in half. The background of reproduction pitchers are rough, filled in, straw-like, you see no plain glass.
Tumbler reproductions have only one indented ring dividing the patterned portion of the glass from the plain glass lip. The old true versions have three. The pattern at the bottom of the reproduction tumblers is brief and almost non-existent in the center curve of the glass bottom. If a pattern does exist is mostly hugs the center of the foot.
Two-handled tray reproductions are heavier (2-1/8 lbs.) with leaves and cherries north/south within the handles as opposed to east/west in the original versions and they have canal type leaves with uneven edges. The cherry stem ends before the canal shaped line.
Cake plate reproductions pink is too light and the leaves have too many parallel veins that look feather. Arches at the plate edge don’t line up on inside of the rim to which the feet are attached.
Bowl (8-1/2″) reproductions have crude leaves with smooth edges and veins in parallel lines.
Cereal Bowl reproductions are the wrong shape with a small 2″ center.
Dinner Plate reproductions have smooth-edged leaves, fish spine type center leaf portions and weigh one-pound less but feel thick at the edge with mould offset lines clearly visible.
Cup reproductions are free of design in the area of the bottom left, the canal centered leaves, and thick top to cup handle as opposed to the original triangle grasp point.
Saucer has an offset mould line edge and canal leaf center.
Shaker reproductions were introduced in 1977 and some were dated ’77 on the bottom. Afterward the non-dated variety appeared. The originals are very scare; new lids could indicate new shakers. Protruding edges beneath the tops are squared off juts, not rounded scallops. The inside bottoms have more glass filler, almost a full 1/4″. Pink color in Far East reproductions is good, the quality and design vary greatly. The green is apparently very, very ugly and cobalt blue is also a new color.
Butter reproductions have only one band encircling the bottom edge of the butter top; Pink and green were the only two original colors for butter dishes.
Shakers reproductions can be found in pink, red, cobalt blue and dark green. Pink was the only original shaker color and the reproductions are a good copy. The easiest way to determine a reproduction shaker is to remove the lid and examine the threads. The reproduction threads have only one continuous line vs. two and ends at the beginning line on the other side. The original threads have two parallel lines which end at the mold seams down each side. No other floral reproductions are known currently.
“Florentine” No. 1
Imported out of Georgia shakers are reproduced in pink, red and cobalt blue. These shakers have little or no design on the bottoms. The reproduced blossoms look more like strawberry with no circles forming the outside of the blossom.
“Florentine” No. 2
Imported out of Georgia, pitchers and juice tumblers appeared in 1996 in cobalt blue, red, dark green and two shades of pink. The footed pitcher was never made in any of these shades or colors. Reproduction pitchers are 1/4″ shorter and the mold line on the lip of the pitcher extends 1/2″ below the lip. The easiest way to identify the reproduced pitcher is the handles, which are 7/8″ wide a 1/8″ larger than the original handles. The reproduction juice tumblers are 3-15/16″ tall and 2″ in base diameter, slightly shorter and narrower at the base than the original.
Iced tea tumblers reproductions have very sharp rays on the bottom of the foot and the paneled designs are very weak as you rotate it in your hand. Reproduction dinner plates are pointed outward (upside down V) on the extreme outer edge of the pattern. The reproduced inside rim slopes inward toward the center of the plate. Reproduction flat tumblers do not have the herringbone in the bottom pattern design and crystal, clear color. If an original crystal/clear piece of Iris is place on a white background it will have a gray or yellow tint, which reproductions do not have. Iris coaster has this particular feature.
“Madrid” called “Recollection”
Teal, pink, crystal and blue were original colors for this pattern. Light teal is a reproduction color easily distinguishable, brighter and more fluorescent. Grill plates were originally in three parts the reproduction is in two parts split down the middle. Goblets and vases were never made in Madrid pattern but do exist as a reproduction. Beware of Hurricane Lamps, which resemble a vase/hurricane lamp. These are strictly reproduction pieces. New shakers in Madrid are short and heavy. Reproduction tumblers, which are very heavy, are being sold in 4 or six pack sets called “On The Rocks.” Look for washed-out pink in cups, saucers, oval vegetable bowl and especially the butter dish, dinner plate, soup bowl or sugar/creamer. The reproduced Madrid candlestick holders have three raised ridges inside to hold the candle more firmly. Some reproduction candleholders also appear in black.
Reproductions shot glasses in pink, as this item was not made in any other color and appear too light pink or orange. In addition, the stem is single as opposed to the original, which branched to form an “A” at the bottom. The reproduction leaf is hollow with veins molded in.
Mayfair reproduction cookie jars; the base has a very indistinct design, which is smooth and faint. The new bottom on the reproductions is perfectly smooth. The cookie jar lid is parallel to the straight side. At the edge it curves toward the center “V” shape. Reproduction green does not have the original yellow/green distinction and does not glow beneath a black light.
Shaker reproduction corner ridges rise to the top and are quiet pronounced. The diameter of the opening is 5/8″ vs. the original 3/4″. Lid diameter is 3/4″ vs. the original 7/8″ and reproduced height of 4″ vs. 4-1/16″.
Mayfair juice pitchers were reproduced in 1993, which are missing the distinct mold circles on the bottoms, and the applied handles are easily identified.
Creamer/sugar reproductions are smaller than originals and are poorly made with an abundance of bubbles. Reproduction butter dish tops have a knob which sticks up away from the butter caused by a longer than usual stem at the top and is convex (curved out) not concave (curved in) on the cover inside.
Shaker reproductions are very difficult to identify. Original colors came in pink, green, cobalt blue and crystal, other colors are reproductions. New shakers will generally have new tops but it should be noted many old shakers have been given new tops. Original shakers have a very neatly formed ridge of glass on which to screw the lid and overlap a little and have rounded off ends. With lids off old shakers stand 3-1/8′ tall, new shakers are3-1/4″ tall.
Tumbler reproductions have 1/2″ of glass in the bottom, a smooth edge on the glass bottom with no mold rim and only two distinct mold marks on the sides of the glass. Pitcher reproductions without the ice lip are all perfectly smooth rimmed at the top edge above the handle. Old pitches have a hump in the top rim of the glass above the handle area, similar to a camel’s hump. Bottom reproduction pitchers have diamond next to the foot, which squash into elongated diamonds. Original pitchers diamonds are noticeably smaller and retain their diamond shape.
Royal Lace reproductions are done in very harsh, extra dark, vivid cobalt blue or orange cast pink.
Cookie Jar reproductions do not have the mold seam found in originals which bisect the center of the pattern one side, and runs across the knob and bisects the pattern on the opposite side. Reproduction cookie jars also contain a large amount of bubbles and imperfections on the bottom with poor molding and a very weak pattern.
First reproduction tumblers had plain bottoms without the four-pointed design. Current reproduced juice tumblers have a bottom design, which is as large as the one on water tumblers and covers the entire glass bottom. There are design flaws on both size tumblers. Four ribs between each of the four designs on the side of the tumblers protrude far enough to catch a fingernail. There is also a semi-circular design on the rim of the glass above those four ribs. There are three complete diamond-shaped designs in reproduction tumblers with two being doubled diamonds (diamond shapes within diamonds) and the semi-circular almost touches the top. Reproduction tumbler bottoms have four-petal design with closed petals unlike the originals with open-ended petals of 1/8″ of open glass at the tip of each petal.
Butter reproductions began appearing in 1976 in “Mayfair Blue”. Reproduced butters have more glass in the top where it changes from pattern to clear glass; it is a thick, defined ring of glass as opposed to a thin, barely defined ring in the originals. The butter lid knob sticks up more and has a sharply defined ridge of glass in the bottom around where the top sits. In 1977 a cheese dish appeared with the butter lid and a different bottom resembling more of a flatter style, thicker and awkward looking. The original cheese bottom was a salad plate, not a bowl, with a rim of glass for holding the top inside the rim.
Other Sharon depression glass reproductions are sugar and creamers that are very light pink and may be found with a “Made In Taiwan” label, which is however, removable. Mold lines in depression glass reproductions run to the left of the center spout. When viewing the sugar, the reproduction center design on both sides has stars at the very bottom of the motif. A thin leaf stem should run directly from that center star upward on both sides bit with the reproduction the stem runs only from one and stops short of the star on one side. The handle attachment looks like a perfect circle on the inside of the sugar whereas the original it’s an upside down “V” shaped teardrop. The reproduction sugar lid knob is perfectly smooth when the edges are grasped.
Shaker depression glass reproductions have rose that appear as poorly drawn circles with wobbly concentric rings and the leaves are not clearly defined. Below the lid a rose bud appears. In the reproduction it appears four paddles of a windmill as opposed to the originals in which the rose bud is angled like a shooting rocket with three leaves at the base of the bud.
Candy dish depression glass reproductions have been made in pink, green, cobalt blue, red, and opaque blue that moves into opalescent. The underside of the candy dish lids in the depression glass reproductions has a ring of glass below the know which is 1/2″ vs. the original at 2″ circle ring platform. The base diameter of the reproductions is 3″ vs. the originals of 3-1/4″. Depression Glass Reproductions quality is rough, poorly shaped and molded.
